well i changed my oil today went to the dealer got an oil filter and the little o ring, got 5w 30 synthetic oil for the first time. and changed my oil in my wrx for my first time. It went well intill the oil came out and into my recycle bin thing, the drain plug fell into the hole and blocked it so the oil went all over the drive way and made a huge F*CKING mess. After that i tried to take the plastic cover off, but the bastards at the dealership i guess put them on too tight and stripped the heads off of all of them. so i had to go in with my hand and get the filter off. (what do you guys use to get the filter off?) then after that everything was easy and then had to clean the oil up. Thank you all for your great help, as i could have not done it with out your knowledge thank you.
there are many different types of oil filter wrenchs. there are ones that look like big pliars, those work best on the turbo cars. how much did you pay for the oil, filter and crush ring? i'm just asking but did you put the crush ring on correctly?

wrench
this is what I use to remove oil filters (I've used it at work for over a year now and it is great)

it just attaches to any 3/8 ratchet. and as you turn it clamps down , makes it easy to remove the filter on any car.
just dont buy a cheap version of it. I originally bought a cheaper version of this at pep boys and it broke after 1 month of use at work.

Yeah, i have one similar to that too. that one is much more universal. some of the non-turbo cars without oil coolers/warmers are really tucked up in the exhaust. and you cant get to them with the wrench i pictured. so you mush either have one of those or phantom death grip to get the thing off. DemonPossessed, where do you work?

Next time you do your oil change it will be much easier to get the oil filter off. Most places tend to over-tighen the oil filter which makes it a PITA to get off.
Now that I think about it I may decide to change out my Fumoto drain valve for the Fumoto drain valve with the nipple. That way I can just attach a hose to the valve and have it drain directly into my recylce jugs that I get from the city.

I mainly work there so I can get rack time when I need to. and its 5 minutes away from my apt.
I recommend people who change their oil at home(without a filter wrench of some kind) loosen the filter when the car is cold. but don't loosen it too much. start the car and run it to operating temp and then change the oil. this way you wont have to fight the oil filter with an expanded gasket (unless your bare hands grips like a vise lol).

Even better would be to buy OEM filters. They well made, come with crush washers for the drain plug, and are cheap: https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/p...roducts_id=830
You can switch to synthetic at this point if you want to and say NO to FRAM.

Couple of FYI's-
Since the oil filter is mounted upside down you can prefill it with oil to eliminate the brief dry start after the oil change while the filter fills up. Pour in some oil, let it soak into the filter, pour in some more, repeat until it's filled to within an inch or two of the top. Don't fill it completely or it may overflow when you put it on.
Run some fresh oil around the filter gasket with your finger just before you screw the filter on.
Make sure the gasket from the old filter came off before you put the new one in place, sometimes they stick and remain behind on the filter housing. Accidental "double-gasketing" will result in a leak.
For those who have the optional 3-gauge pod from Subaru, the drain plug has been replaced with one that incorporates the oil temperature sensor and it is not 17mm. It's 27mm and because there is a wire running to it you'll need a 27mm open-end wrench rather than a box-end or socket.
