new bay area subaru owner

Hi all,

Figured I'd introduce myself to the forum

I was just gifted my moms old impreza, a 98 ej22 sedan (not sure of the proper way to classify my subaru, I've owned BMWs before and we usually go by the chassis/model, I had an e30 325is and an e36 325is (( Hyphe36 on bmw forums )), miss them but thats another story).

My mom has had the car since 1999, she bought it slightly used from a dealership with 10k miles, she just got gifted a super low mileage car from a friend (complicated story) so she gave me the now 216,xxx subaru I am fortunate to know practically the entire history of this car. It has been fairly well maintained, she was good about oil changes but not so much other preventative maintenance, it has had some work done for things that could've been prevented, but all in all it's still in excellent mechanical condition.

I've had it for about two months now and put some miles on it and have started to get excited to make it my own. The holidays hit my funds pretty hard so I've just been doing what I can with what I have.

I spent a few days doing some extensive cleaning and giving the car some love after years and years of life in the Sierra Nevadas with heavy neglect of cleaning. Took the old ugly hubcaps off and worked through 14+ years of brake dust and road grime build up. Filled the shopvac clearing all the foliage in the trunk and engine gutters. Spent some quality time with a toothbrush on the dash and center console. Gave the carpet some serious vacuuming and spot cleaning. Got good and dirty scrapping my knuckles cleaning the engine bay

After that I dug out my BMW reserve box and looked at what goodies I had left that might be able to be put to use in the subaru. I still had some gear oil (royal purple, flame suit on haha) so I decided I would start on the preventative things this car has never seen. Seafoamed the car (quite a show at 216k lol), put some more seafoam in the oil, took a drive down the coast, came back and changed the oil (castrol gtx high mileage), both differentials since its an automatic transmission, and the fuel filter (the fuel filter was knarly! Never seen such dirty gas!). I'll continue with tranny, brake, power steering, and coolant flushes when I get my next paycheck. Also going to put some new plugs and wires in it, who knows how long they've been in it.

I feel like I'm rambling now and possibly getting away from an introduction so I'll stop here for now, but I'm greatly looking forward to meeting some nice knowledgeable people here. Cheers!
