6cyl vs 4 cyl

I've got a '98 Legacy GT wagon, and have a friend who is looking at a newer scooby. Someone told her that the 4cylinder was 'problematic' and the 6cyl was the way to go. I know the older models had head gasket issues (we've done one, too) but thought that issue had been addressed.
Any input on the 4 vs 6? Seems like almost all the scoobies use the 4.
TIA
