Just as a heads up, the Sheriffs and SJPD may just be making a hiring list rather than actually hiring (they may or may not tell you that). A good friend of mine works for SCS and they have been debating cutting back hours severely (when you do take the test, make sure you check the box to be considered for a Correctional Officer position as well, two job chances for one test!). Its pretty much the same for SJ, from what I hear there is a hiring freeze (for Fire definitely, PD is more than likely the same). So I guess my point is, don't expect it quickly. It will be very good to get on both of those lists though.
As far as not having enough credits, sign up for classes at a JC. Tell them you are working on getting the last few units you need. For gov't jobs, being in or at least signed up for the class can be as good as having taken it already. Also if it really is just a hiring list, you will have enough time to secure the remaining credits while waiting to be hired (i.e- 6mo to a year).
Sorry for the long winded post, just crap I've learned in 8 years of trying lol...
