Need help with timing belt
I started the 120k mile maintenance on my 95 Legacy LS with automatic transmission. I removed the radiator and timing belt cover. I have not disturbed the timing belt yet.
My Chilton book says to align the the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks with the notches on the back cover and the crank angle sensor boss. Basically the cams and crank notches have to be at 12 o'clock.
However, when I set the crank at 12, the cams are at 10 o'clock. When I set the cams at 12, the crank is at 3 o' clock.
There is no way that I can set all 3 at 12 o'clock without changing the current cam to crank relationship. The timing belt was changed at 60k by the dealer and it has been running fine.
What am I doing incorrectly here?
Thanks a bunch in advance.
Matt

Yup, this drove me nuts, too!
Here's what I do:
1.Ignoring the lines on the belt, set the crank to TDC.
2. Remove the belt, & line up the witness marks on the camshaft sprockets.
3. Install new belt...easier said than done...start at the crank & move to the passenger-side head....then do the driver's side head. I usually remove the bottom passenger-side idler pulley and replace it once the belt is on.
4. Once the belt is on...it may take you a couple of tries...turn the motor over by hand one complete revolution and you'll notice that the lines don't synchronize with the witness marks.

this is what i do when I change the timing belt (a tech from subaru dealership told me this trick
). before you take the belt off. Mark the gear AND the belt with some kind of market (I used whiteout). Take the new belt, supeposistion it on top of the old belt and mark the marks on the same spots. Put the new belt on and match the marks on gears. Bam! You are done. Of course some of the belts and gears have marks on them. Have fun!
