Legacy GT Wagon with 5 speed auto
I drove the new Legacy GT with the 5 speed automatic a couple of days ago. It's a really fun car, and you definetely feel the potential in that 2.5 engine. The 5 speed auto with the sport shift was kinda cool. You could shift with the gear selector on the floor, or you could use the buttons on the steering wheel. The only problem with the transmission was that the shifts were VERY late. I'd hit the button and it'd take a few seconds to change gears. However, after 3k, that engine just purrs and the turbo spools beautifully. I got it up to about 80 and it felt unbelievably stable. It reminded me of driving a 740i BMW. Just so smooth.
I noticed a couple of interesting things. First, the intake manifold is plastic. I'm not sure what this means for the aftermarket. I'm sure the STi and Forrester XT manifold is a direct bolt-on. However, this leads to the second thing. The turbo is made quit differently than the WRX and STi turbos. The compressor housing to intercooler connection is completely different. The turbo bolts to the intercooler, and it goes up towards the hood instead of sideways towards the driver's side. Next, the intercooler is completely different. Probably similar in cubic size to the WRX, but more narrow and deeper. Lastly, I can't be positive, but I'm pretty sure that the suspension is inverted strut. I tried to push up the boot on the strut, but couldn't completely. I felt around and the diameter of the rod felt like the same width as my STi takeoffs. Also, the spring seat has holes like the version 8 STi suspension, but the whole assembly is black.
Overall the car is D@MN COOL. I love the wheels and need a set for my WRX. I really want one, but I just can't get rid of my baby.

I drove one Friday night. Lots more power then my 00' GT wagon, and this was just a slush box. I can't wait to get my right foot into one with a stick. I agree the auto trans was a bit slow to shift. That's why I'm getting the stick.
Again LOTS of power even for a automatic. You can get a STI short throw shifter for the 5 speed. That's the only way to go...

Where did the del-tuning occur? If the 2.5L STI gets 300 hp, why only 250 for this one, with 2.5L also?
ps: the upcoming October edition of Sports Car will feature getting more out of the WRX: I hope they mean the WRX, not the STI. (Mine is an '02 showroom stock and I'm getting ready for more.)

As for the 5 speed auto, I'm sad to hear it is slow with its shift. It doesn't seem much faster then if you manually shift a current slushbox.

I would highly recommend that everyone get the 5-speed stick. I'm lov'in mine. The car will chirp tires in second gear. Not bad for a wagon. The clutch feels a lot more stout then the one in my 00' GT.
Another cool item is the head lights. The projectors have a very difined cut line. you can even see where the two head lights meet. The left one is a bit higher then the right, so you can see the upper inside corner of the two light beams.
