2005 Outback problem. What to do?
My sister just bought a 2005 Outback and her and her hubby love it.
They found a leak from front rack and pinion. They heard a hissing/growling sound come from and took it to the dealer.
Dealer calls them back and says it's a leak and they want to replace the Rack and Pinion. Dealer says it's not broken but they will replace it because it's so new. The car isn't even broken in yet.
Should there be any concern? Should they consider trying to get the car replaced if it's even possible?
Any feed back would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Chris

I say get the car fixed under waranty. The new Outback don't have any design flaws, but possibly the random manufacturing flaw here and there. The car should be fine, it just looks like a bad steering rack was accidentially installed.
I don't think a bad steering rack is indicitive of any other manufacturing flaw that may or may not be on the vehicle.

Bad rack
I would say that a bad rack was accidently installed. I work in the automotive industry and I see it all the time. It doen't mean that they purchased a lemon. I have an 04 WRX wagon and the radiator sprung a leak. They replaced it under warranty. No problems since. When parts and vehicles are produced on such a vast scale, there is no way that every part is going to be perfect. They probably won't have any other significant problems with their Outback.

I just wanted to say that my 05 2.5XT started making growling sounds too, I think it has a leak in the PS system. I figured I would chime in. I called Suby and they said to refill the PS res and see if that fixs it. The car is only 6 months old.
