So I've got this '96 legacy gt, all stock, 65k miles on it, but when I crank it over, the engine sputters and does not start. It takes pumping the gas pedal just to get the car started. Also, after the engine reaches operating temperature, it sputters when trying to leave a stop, to the point where it is too dangerous to drive. It works fine at above about 1.5k rpm, only when stopped or idling. I think it might be an O2 sensor fault that is messing up the closed loop system on the fuel injection, but I took it to a certified Subaru dealer, and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. The check engine light goes on and off as it pleases, which leads me to believe that the faulty part is not completely broken, just screwed up. Any insight would be appreciated.

Sounds like what was happening to my 03 last summer, it would sputter when i started to accelerate, I thought something was wrong with the engine, like yours the check engine light was going on and off. Funny thing was it was just the spark plugs that needed to be replaced, nothing big...and it worked fine afterwards. Hope you got yours working again!
