Why no DRLs with HIDs?

I just got an '05 9-2X with factory HIDs and I was surprised to find that only cars equipped with halogen lamps come with DRLs (daytime running lamps.) Is the STI the same way? Is there a way to add the DRLs, perhaps through the city lights (white low intensity lamps next to HIDs)? I was also a little disappointed to find that not only are they single xenon (low beam only), but they are also not projector type. The height adjusters are pretty cool though.

Subaru implements DRL's by sending 80% power to the low beams. You can't do that with HID lights, therefore no DRL's on any HID-equipped Subie. I'm sure that if you work at it hard enough you could make your own, but I would have to ask why. If it matters that much to you just turn the headlights on and turn the interior lights up/down as needed.

Thanks. Yah, that's what I've been doing. It's even easier given that the lights auto shut-off with ignition off.

You don't want to leave the lights on when you turn the car off, so that they come back on automatically when you start the car. This can create a voltage spike that will harm your bulbs/ballasts.

Good tip. I'll check the owner's manual for more on that.
