- Use soft terry cloth, previously washed in hot water without too much soap (you dont want it staying on the cloth).
- Use warm water.
- fold and rinse cloths often so that you dont grind the finish.
- always dry with a DAMP cloth or chamois. Never rub dry material along the finish.
The "pros" often use cloth diapers. But most cotton rags that are previously washed in hot water will be soft enough.

www.autopia.org will help you a lot.
i wash with a cotton terry wash mitt, one soap bucket and one rinse bucket, wash top to bottom. dry with microfiber cloth from pakshak.com (mention autopia member pricing). that's it!

I wash my Suby in warm water with Griot's Garage Car liquid. Rinse with hose and dry with a Pro soft silicone squeegee and dab with a high a quality micro-fiber towel. No marks,no swirls. And you can use 3M swirl remover on your Mom's car without harming the finish.

leaf blower
if you keep your car waxed regularly after you wash it if you have access to a leaf blower try that. I detail cars on the side and I was always having problems with chames so I tried my echo back pack blower and i will never go back to hand drying again. It also works great on motercycles.
Found a really nice microfiber towel on autopia.org's review section. It's actually all cotton but with a microfiber weave... SOFT! the 16x29 was more than
enough to dry off my whole wagon with no chance of scratchy...
Here's the review link...
