Using this forum's Search feature with keywords 'daytime running light', one of the results was this excellent thread on how to deactivate the Daytime Running Lights correctly. Check your local laws pertaining to daytime running lights or driving with only parking lights on - in CA the latter is illegal.

It's only illegal after sunset right? Or is it all the time illegal???

Have a friend who got a ticket for after dark.

Any time the vehicle is in motion.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc24800.htm

California Vehicle Code, section 24800:
"24800. No vehicle shall be driven at any time with the parking lamps lighted except when the lamps are being used as turn signal lamps or when the headlamps are also lighted."

I believe this law was enacted because of the people I see driving often well past dusk with only the parking lights operating. This leaves out any ambiguity about when it is considered dark out. Even with the new law requiring motor vehicles to use their headlights any time it is raining out, I saw people driving in pouring rain at 6:45 in the morning on the freeway on Saturday with no lights on at all!
