Smoothing Plastics

I recently took off the center peice from my front grill (the emblem part). I used a saw to basicly cut the whole chunk out and sanded it down. I used a very rough file to sand it down to almost leveled with the rest of the grill. the top you wont see, but on the bottom it has an area of my filing and is very noticable. im not sure what to do for my next step.
should i go for:
1. sanding it smooth all around and spray painting it black?
2. or is there a way to smooth it out using super fine wet/dry sanding that will make it look just like the rest of the grill?

ill try to post some pics of what im talking about once i get home.
