Smoothing Plastics

I recently took off the center peice from my front grill (the emblem part). I used a saw to basicly cut the whole chunk out and sanded it down. I used a very rough file to sand it down to almost leveled with the rest of the grill. the top you wont see, but on the bottom it has an area of my filing and is very noticable. im not sure what to do for my next step.
should i go for:
1. sanding it smooth all around and spray painting it black?
2. or is there a way to smooth it out using super fine wet/dry sanding that will make it look just like the rest of the grill?

ill try to post some pics of what im talking about once i get home.

I recently did the same thing.

After the "rough cut" I used 320 sandpaper to smooth down the high areas. I then used Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty to fill in any chips/cuts/low spots. (comes in large toothpaste-type tube) Apply in very thin layers and keep applying/sanding until smooth. I used 600 wet/dry paper until it was "perfect". The Bondo was really easy to work with (and not $$$)

Important to clean sanding dust btwn each application and paint layer. (I used rubbing alcohol) I then spray painted with Krylon "Fusion for plastics" paint and sanded lightly btwn layers. LOTS of light paint layers.

Results were perfect (or at least, perfect enough).

Remember, the enemy of good is better!

good luck.
