"HIR does not work with dual-filament bulbs, because in order for the effect to work, the filament must be *precisely* at the center of the bulb, and the bulb must be spherical (not tubular) in shape. There are two filaments in a 9007, and only the high beam is near the center of the bulb." - From Dan the man...

If I understand it right there is a minor modification to the bulb holder base to get it to fit in the headlamp. As I say I'll let everyone know after I get them in

OK, just to sum this up and try to get some useful data out of this thread:

1) Ricey blue painted bulbs = BAD

2) Narva/Osram bulbs and Sylvania Xtravisions = GOOD

3) Trying to add HID systems to car without them from the factory = potentially VERY BAD

4) HIR bulbs will never work on WRX(9007) because they are single-filament and do not support high beams(dual-filament)

So, after all of this...

Which damn headlamps should I get for my 02 WRX????

Well I do believe you answered your own question... Seeing as the only number that you gave a "good" label was 2)

Fair enough... But there are three choices there (and I forgot to mention Philips, which the Daniel Stern page also seems to favor...)

Decisions, decisions. I think I'll spring for the Philips bulbs, and report back in a week or so.

EDIT: No Philips Vision Plus in 9007

Looks like Osram for me.

I've been running the H4 bulbs from Stern for about 3 years now and like them a lot. I have them in the low beams in our OB too.

more info:
What is the difference between the Sylvania Silverstar and the Osram Silverstar?

Osram Sylvania is one and the same company, within the US they use both Osram and Sylvania, outside the US its Osram. The Osram Silverstar is a clear bulb with Xenon gas boost to increase brightness up to 50% color is similar to standard halogen though it is slightly whiter. The Sylvania Silverstar is the same bulb but with an amethyst blue coating with 30% more light than standard halogen and 4000K light color which is comparable to Xenon/High Intensity Discharge Light Systems as seen on high end cars from Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Lexus, Mercedes Benz, Porsche to name a few.

Sylvania Silverstar is currently available in 9003/H4, 9004, 9005, 9006, 9007 & sealed beam sizes, the Sylvania Silverstar is the Super White (blue/grey coated) version of the Osram Silverstar (clear) which is available in H1, H4, & H7. Osram Silverstar color is slightly whiter (very slightly) than regular halogen. We also have the Narva Range Power Blue bulbs are made in Germany and DOT compliant. The Osram Silverstar is E code (ECE Reg 37) but not tested for DOT compliance (FMVSS 108) since the bulb is made for the European market, but most likely meets US DOT standards if tested. All these bulbs are stock wattage so it will not have any effect on wiring.
