Outside air temp gauge from Outback?

Has anyone tried hooking up the fuel/temp gauge sub-cluster from an Outback sport to utilize its Outside air temperature display? My manual shows it hooked up to an ECU somewhere but gives no details.

Option 2: Has anyone had good luck with an aftermarket 2" OAT gauge or a small quality display that won't take over my dash?

Option 3 is to strip down an non-contact infrared thermometer and mount the sensor on the bottom of my side mirror with the display inside to give me the surface temp of the roadway, which is what I really want to know anyway.
Would love to hear what anyone has come up with along these lines.

(No, I don't want to drill a hole in my windshield for an aircraft OAT, so don't ask!)
