im pretty sure that you should adjust them when the switch is set to a normal position. then you can use the switch to lower them when your going up hill or when you have a load in your trunk.

what do you mena when it's at a normal position?

Are you trying to say that I need to make sure the left and the right side lights are positioned exactly the same?

there is no auto leveling (like BMW or Lexus) on the Subaru leveling switch.
So you need to adjust it manually.

Normal position means.. when the switch is dialed to the normal position.
The switch is to adjust the headlight lower in case you have heavy load in the trunk
