HIDs + Lowering - Questions
Hey guys,
Just two topics I would like to explore further. Is there anyway to convert stock lighting to HID? I've seen the topic covered on 2nd Gen. Legacies - I have a '03, and don't know if HIDs is even an option.
The only thing I've seen is dual projector beam headlamps with HIDs pre-installed. However, these are only available direct-ship from Japan, and cost over $1,000.
Next, lowering. I don't know why, but with an AWD car, I am nervous about messing with suspension. What are the do's and do not's, and what components do you recomend? I've always been partial to Bilsteins, but I don't know if these work with a lowered Subie.
Eh, I lied. One more question. Anyone have the Rallitek intake? Opinions?
Thanks for your help guys.

my 95 is dropped 1.25" on kg/mm springs... there is no problem at all, and it handles a lot better, i just picked up some kyb agx shocks and when i get those in it'll be even better. as far as i know there is an hid kit available, since they have one available for mine i would imagine that they have one for the be/bh legacys too. i don't know where though. i have the rallitek intake and i like it a lot, the fit is perfect, there is a noticable gain, especially in the higher rpm range, and it sounds awesome. the only concern i had was mounting it with the bracket they give you but sean from rallitek is a good guy and he helped me out. hope this helps.

yea lowering our cars is ok. You will want an alignment to get back to spec but aside from that I have had no probs and been lowered for 2.5 years.
STi makes lowering springs for your car, so thats basically a factory approved spring, also bilstiens come stock on high model legacys in japan, however they are very expensive to buy new (like 1k, just struts) and hard to find used.

definately lower your car! I have a 2000 sedan and used the whiteline springs for the whole thing. The only problem that I had with the springs was that I wish the fron was 1/4 inch lower.. but that is just a prefrence thing. Sti springs are spendy, and you have to use the impreza top mounts... if i remember correctly, do a search on them, some guy just installed them not too long ago.
As for the HID.... I have the catz zeta system in my car, it was really easy to install, and looks "rad"
As for intake, I have heard good reviews about the rallitek, but I went with the injen instead. The inken goes down into the fender, so you dont pull hot air from the engine compartment..... hence the purpose of getting a "cold air intake" It fit great, and went in easy. Just a few snag spots, but nothing serious at all. Good luck with your stuff

Ryan, could you post a pic of your lights?
Im looking for something a bit more substantial in terms of light than the dinky oem halogens. Leaning towards dropping the whack of cash for JDM HID's but I want to research my options as well.
btw, have any of you BE owners notice the gradual pitting/yellowing of your headlamps? An advantage of getting the JDM assemblies is that the covers are glass and would not pitt like that.
Jeff, I use Whitelines as well. They're made for OEM shocks/struts and lower the car significantly. Although in a couple of years, the shocks will go but KYB has put out a set for the BE so there's that option.

Hikori:
yea, I will try and get a pic up in the next few days.... I have to try and find a digital camera... mine crapped out.
As for the headlight lenses, I feel your pain.... here is how to fix it.
1. Set aside the better part of a day to do this project... it is one of those ones, the longer you spend the better it looks.
2. Go get some real high grit wet sand paper form a body shop... 1000 grit, and 2000 grit.
3. Find someone that has a buffer, buffing pad, and a cutting pad... (if they have a buffer, they will know what the cutting pad is)
4. Remove the lights, start wet sanding in one direction with the 1000 grit, after a bit, turn 90 degrees and keep wet sanding after awhile of that, switch to the 2000 grit and do the same thing
+++++= make sure that you keep your sand paper wet!++++=
5. After you have sanded the lenses, take the buffer with the cut in pad, and the cutter, and go over the lense
6. After that, use the regular buffing pad, and polish it to a show room finish.
This is exactly what I did, and my lenses look 100 times better... granted there are still some minor pits, but damn.... well worth the effort.
ps... you can do the buffing bit by hand but it takes a LONG time to do.
pps. Meguires makes a two step lense renewing kit, but I found out about it after I had done the project... might be worth a shot

yes, i know about wet sanding/polishing of plastic lenses. it has been discussed about a half year ago on nasioc.
however, i took delivery of my BE last April and already the lenses are pitting.
i think i would rather spend the money to get high quality parts that will last than to spend a few hours every year to polish a cheap imitation.
