A trick that the VW's used was get a set of trunk shocks for an early Supra.
They came with the ball ends. You could screw them into the hinge and into the fender.
Check out the selection at pep boys, you'll be able to figure it out.
Maybe search vwvortex forums under the mk3 section for hood lifts
