allows air to escape when you're closing the trunk so it will properly close

thats so the pressure in the car doesn't jump up when you close door or trunk... as well as vent air out of your car when you have the air blowing into the car from outside...

otherwise you would have to to re adjust your sinus pressure like when you fly or go sub surface... yawn or pop ears or whatever you do when you need to do it...

what they said but also when you get into an accident, when the air bags get deployed it allows pressure to relieve so you dont blow out your ear drums.
