We all iclubbers want to go fast dont get us wrong but we dont try to take risks and that all i think they are trying to tell ya that. Im sure most of em were in your shoes and im pretty sure they all have different motors now lol so dont hate just educate urself as to the potential of engine failure that could happen if not well atleast youll know
Understandable. So in everyones opinion. A 16g would be good? I just think the vf39 is too small a turbo for my front mount I'm hitting 18 psi close to 4 grand already. I'm not new to the Subi world but I do have a lot to learn. So if u guys could give me se real useful info that would be good. Aside from "your internals can't handle that much power"
A 16G is only slightly bigger than VF series turbos. Not worth spending the money on one if you already have the VF. You will be disappointed. If you're wanting to upgrade to suit the needs if your FMIC you are probably going about it the wrong way. Small turbos are just not suited to FMICs at all because most of them have cores and piping that are entirely too big (yes, you can be too big for an application) and because you're negating the primary advantage of having a small turbo, its responsiveness. Unless you're going with a 20G or larger, see if you can find a good TMIC. And if you're hitting full boost at 4k, the FMIC is not your only issue.
If you're wanting more power you're gonna have to penny up to do it. You've already left inexpensive modding behind. My only suggestion would maybe be to try an 18G. But that's pretty much the highest you'll want to go.

I say around 4grand at full boost but that's in 3rd gear rolling from like 25 mph lol. I usually hit full boost around 3grand in second and it stays there where I shift to third. I have the access tuner race software which is totally Greek to me, would cranking up the boost at all be a better advantage. I'm in a club where everyone is over 300whp and I just wanna be able to hang. Would just getting a protune with my vf39 do that??

like mentioned above your not going to see much of a difference in going to a 16g. I think a few points some are missing and this is totally my opinion. why not go to a 20g but not more than a 30r stock location or it's equivalent? I know a few people running a 30r on a stock 2.0 block. from there based off of your tuners opinion push about 20psi' + or - again based off your tuner, some really conservative timing and keep the AFR's rich.
transmission, if I remember correctly the 02 and early 03 trans suffered from case flex. so you might want think about that also.
whatever you do it's your car in the end we can only suggest.
my 2 pennies

4080wrx- thank u for ur input, that's some useful info. Ive thought about a 20g before. I'm just trying to figure out the best option for me. I'm tuning with ams in July when they come back out so I'll have plenty of time to figure it out. I think as long as I keep the torque a lil low than I should be good with around 350 plus or minus
Spool is relative to gear. Which gear are you expecting 4k boost in?
The wrx gears are wide, and so it will exacerbate the lag feeling. Krang is right. You generally will need to go with something like 56-60 lb per minute turbo, like an ATP 3076 or an hta green. But it won't spool by 4k in 1-2 or likely 3rd, but it may hit that in the higher gears.
if you want to upgrade from your vf39 and lower your hp expectations, there's also the Dom xt series 20g xt. You're probably going to have run a lot of pressure to hit your mark though. I think that it will feel slow to spool, but it may show decent numbers on the dyno. But spool versus rpm is different than spool versus time.
You could try driving 2.0l here with upgraded turbos, but I believe most of them have jdm swaps which means they have close ratio gearing, and so that kills a lot of the lag, and some of them have avcs. A 5 speed 2.0 lacks the displacement and the close ratio gearing so while you can hit your hp mark it might be hard to hit your spool mark in the lower gears, where you will spend most of your driving.

i've got a nice 11 wrx for sale
really though the 20g is too much turbo for that little 2.0 so while it is certainly do-able, you should consider changing platforms if you want to make more power.
