Upgrading turbocharger, questions
I have a 2002 WRX and I would like to upgrade the turbocharger. Right now I have an HKS uppipe, HKS downpipe and HKS Hi-power muffler. I would like to have around 300 WHP, and I would like this to be a reliable car. How much would this cost me? I know I would need the turbo, injectors, intercooler, fuel pump and engine management. Is there anything else I need?

yeah, gauges wouldn't be a bad idea at that point. i can't comment much on the vf22, sice i don't have one, nor have i ridden in a car with one. i have heard that they don't spool until relatively high rpms. then again, most turbos big enough to support 300+ at the wheels are pretty damn big, and take some time to spool. if you go with a vf22, talk to the fine folks at Deadbolt, they port turbos to make them spool faster.

some people shred gears with stock hp, others are making 280 @ the crank and not breaking gears. it kinda depends on how you drive, and how lucky you got with your tranny. with 300hp, i'd count on replacing it sooner rather than later though.

your playing russian roulette with the stock tranny.. it may last, but like muppet said, people with stock horsepower broke them too
if you really wanna be reliable, plan to plop down the 6k for a STi tranny

driver not power
There are some people that have over 150 drag strip passes and 400+ hp using a 50 shot of N2O, that are still on the orginal tranny. If you don't abuse it you will probably be okay at that power level.
A 100 shot of N2O will shell low gear in the blink of an eye.
The tranny is not weak, so much as it has limited ability to survive major mistakes.
You will only get away with a couple of bad mistakes.

I've got a Cobb St 2, Helix U/P, D/P, Samco hoses, Hyper exhaust (I wish we could post sigs it'd save me the trouble...) and the tranny is showing no signs of wear...However, I granny shift it and I put it into second before I go into first. I really think the trannys are ok, but you REALLY have to be careful with them (ie no powershifts....)
Not to hijack your thread but...guys, I'm looking at a 22 myself and need to know if the STI injectors can max out the turbo (since it's rated to 25 psi and let's not get into the boost vs useable hp thing on this one) or do I need to go with something bigger injector wise...

You don't have to, but it would be a good idea. Even with the maps you can download, every car is different and what might work well for one may not be the perfect fit for all...
In other words, you'll leave some power on the table more than likely.

I just found this on Cobb's site:
We will be releasing AccessECU maps for the VF34 and VF30 turbochargers on Nov 17th, 2003.
The suggest modifications to use these maps are:
VF34 or VF30 Turbo
STI Injectors (REQUIRED)
Catless Uppipe
Full Turboback Exhaust System
Stock Air Box
Stock Intercooler
The map names will be:
AE-WRX-VF30-91 (91 Octane)
AE-WRX-VF30-93 (93 Octane)
AE-WRX-VF34-91 (91 Octane)
AE-WRX-VF34-93 (93 Octane)
These maps are NOT our Stage 3 mapping. Our Stage 3 mapping will not be released until Feb/March 2004.
We've been using and refining these maps for the past 7-8 months but we really wanted to wait until the AccessPORT was released. However, we have found some ways with our AccessECU technology to provide at least very close to the level of consistency that I expect.
Again, the first day we'll be flashing these maps will be on Monday, November 17th. Please do not send any ECUs in for this map until then.
The cost is of course still the same $395 or a $20 upgrade for current AccessECU owners.
Thanks,
Trey @ COBB Tuning
