I believe the contacts have gone bad. I was looking around to see if the mitsubishi starter that was used on my car is serviceable. All I have found was writeups on the Denso ones.

really? mine did the same thing but mine was my clifford two way alarm. jimi also had this issue with his viper version. I replaced my starter (new one not reman), battery and positive cables thinking it was that and it was still happening. just trying to stop you from spending money on something you don't need. after I took out my alarm. no problem starting. i also went through 2 red top optima batteries as well. thought it was other electrical in my car. i didn't have starter kill either. something happens in the brain that causes the issue. after I replace the alarm no problems after that.

Jiggle your shift selector...
My legacy wouldnt start and it turned out to be the linkage between the shift selector and the transmission... it had loosened causing the shift lock mech to interupt the starter.
A starter with bad contacts would slowly start to give you starting issues... not immediately fail
Try putting the 4EAT in neutral and starting it.
