It could've been because they were at speed as well with wind turbulence and such.

 

oh knock it off you ballistics experts you!!! hahaha nah jk........ as far as being able to hear a small caliber ballistic projectile......... uhmmm i speak from experience...... i definitely heard the 25. caliber bullet right before it hit me and believe you me those thing suck to get hit by talk about pinball action on your internals....

 

paintballs are bigger than bulletts... also travel at a lot slower speeds as well...
