Wrx's on boost?

This is a question for all you wrx owners. When your cruising on the highway at normal speeds between 65-75 mph in 5th gear are you getting any boost? Are there any adverse effects from driving on boost for extended (18 hours) amounts of time? I ask this because I'm having a hard time convincing a friend of mine to go on a cross country road trip with me because he is worried about his car blowing up, he hits 18psi of boost when going 75 on the highway in 5th...

haven't seen you in a while...how are the headers...i would think that it'll not be good to have that amount of boost for a long period of time....after all...the engine is being pressurized....your EGT will blow through the roof boosting too long!! everytime i hit boost going up the LikeLike im worried about my EGT going too high so i let it off once in a while...but its obvious that your friend is running more than stock boost...i assume he has a boost controller for this...maybe he can turn the boost down and take additional rest stops??...so your friend does have a point there...anyone care to add to this?? Laterz

Ok, ... I was going to leave this one alone b/c it doesn't make sense, but ....
First, "extended" periods of 'high' boost can be 'bad' b/c the air temps will continue to rise, blah, blah, blah ....
But you're only going to experience those kinds of conditions if you're pulling a 20 ton trailer or going up a steep *** hill the whole way.
Under full throttle acceleration, full boost, etc, you're EGT's will rise, and if you don't have a 'coling system' good enough to keep the temps from continuing to rise, you would have to 'back off'. If you have a Huge *** intercooler (or one that is Plenty efficient for the size turbo), you won't have to worry about it b/c your intake temps stay low, so your EGT's stay low, etc, etc.
Why in the f*cking world your friend is at 18psi at 75mph in 5th grear cruising is beyond me, ... except he's a dumb *** and is on crack.
If you're under full throttle, accelerating to 75mph, yeah, then maybe you'd be at 18psi .....
What turbo does he have, stock?? If it's stock, why the hell does he have the boost set at 18psi?? And if the answer is something like "It only goes to 18 whnever I have it floored in the higher gears??", well, he doesn't know how to set a boost controller.
Anyway, the point is, there is no problem driving long distances with a turbo'd car. Think about that for a minute, ......... HOW F*CKING STUPUID OF A QUESTION IS THAT???? Okay, sorry about that, ... but why on GOd's green Earth would any car manufacturer build turbocharged cars if you could drive them more than 100 miles without them blowing up??
ok, I'm tired of typing, so someone else pick up where I left off, if I missed anything.

(hope that helkps though)

Just tell your below average intelligence buddy to turn down the boost.
The fact that anyone has a system that hits 18psi of boost while cruising it freakin' nuts. Sounds like he's smokin' the crack, but if it's the truth; WOW.
Turn down the boost
turn down the boost
turn down the boost.
If my system does that while I'm cruising, I'm adjusting/changing it. But I don't think I'll have that problem.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough Sean. My friend doesn't have a wrx, he has a highly modded 180sx with a sr20det. He hits max boost of 30 psi at the track and has really short gearing so he has to keep it at high revs in 5th to maintain highway speed. The reason I asked and after reading your answer I realize it was maybe a stupid question but you have to remember I'm not familiar with the charactaristics of a turbo car in every day driving. For example I didn't realize you we're only in boost when under heavy load. I thought that if a turbo "is fully spooled at 3000 rpm" like people say, then it would continue to create boost if engine speed stayed above 3000 rpm, sorry if I sounded ingnorant, but I was.

Don't take anything Sean says personally dude.
It's hard to communicate on these online forums.
IF he's got a 30 psi engine then 18 shouldn't be as big of a deal.
Tell him to turn it down to 10 and call it good.
diesel engines are made for high boost and run continuously on high boost. If his engine is really designed for 30 then I don't think that 10-18 will be that bad for it. IT's more efficient and as long as his cooling system and intercooler can cover for the heat/power he shouldn't have a problem.

WOW!! ..... and yeah, I thought you were talking about a WRX.
If he's got all that, he should have plenty of gauges to watch what is going on. It still doesn't seem right to be at 18psi when cruising, but if he has Really short gears it might be in boost more often to keep the speed up, .... but 18 still seems high.
And is he running 30psi on pump gas for daily driving???!!!!
Man, ... I'd like to see that ...
... but you said at the track he was hitting that. What's he run for daily driving? What turbo is he running? What gears does he have? and what'd he do to the engine?
sorry for all the questions
