So you think I should go to Iraq?

I have the opportunity as a civilian to go to Iraq for some IT work. If the pay is good(well very good) I may take it up. If I can make in 6 months what I could make in a year or so, I would jump on it. Oh and it would have to be tax free as well.

But I would be living in a tent, I would have to take the anthrax vaccine, I would be under militay orders, etc...

What do you guys think. I know with many of you in the military I'm sure some of you have some sort of experience in the middle east. I know San was in Turkey for a while.

I'd go just for the tax free part.

I used to work with a lot of DAC (Department of the Army Civilians) in Korea. A lot of them were ex-military, but some weren't. Nobody complained too much when we were in the field because they were making BANK! Plus, while we got to go run around in the sun/rain/snow/slush/human-waste-fertilized rice paddies they got to sit back and do tech support.

They had some long hours (on call for WHATEVER went wrong, and Army equipment is pretty high maintenance) but once again, the FIRST $75k they made was tax free.

Plus, I'm guessing you won't be out in the streets too much. Haven't heard about any civilians (other than Iraqi civilians ( getting capped.

I'd do it. It's an adventure. Just think of yourself as Lara Croft w/o the juggy jugs or the .45's

I'm with you on this. You can make the first $75,000 tax free, I also want to say that you don't have to pay any intrest(sp?) on loans.

Excuse me? So with my current car loan, I wont get anymore interest during my time there? That would be so sweet!

I've had the anthrax,

so far so good. Living over there will sure make you appreciate coming home. I guess Dirty Harry would say, "Do you feel lucky?"

I'd recommend go. My gut feeling about this theater is that it is probably safer in Iraq for civilians than it probably any other theater (Kosovo, Afghanistan, Bosnia...)

I'd say go for it as well. It's by no means going to be a walk in the park, ... but you already know that.

as far as the interest on loans thing, .... you have to check with your financing institution for the details. They probably won't be of much help, b/c they are loosing out on the deal, but they may know what you're talking about. You may have to find it in writing somewhere.
I don't know about civilians though, I just know active duty personel have things like that to take advantage of, ... but you always have to initiate it with the institution obviously.

Nope.

http://www.msnbc.com/news/870749.asp?0cv=CB10

An American civilian was killed and at least two U.S. soldiers were wounded on Tuesday in two separate attacks in Iraq. It was not clear who was behind the latest attacks, but increasingly U.S. officials are suggesting foreign fighters — and by implication, Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida network.
