Any suggestions on this, Sean? As much as I can't believe it - this might be the way I have to go. AMAZING.

Turbo shop called me this morning and said that he is having a HECK of a time finding parts.
A hard enough time in fact that he's going to do some investigation to see if the seal REALLY needs replacing.
ARGH. All will turn out well, repeats mantra, clicks heels...
Maybe I'll just have him slap it back together with the proper shaft nut torque and try to install it again?
*whimper*

hey Richard, ... you know, if the guy can 'resurface' the parts needed, and then torque it properly like you said, ... it might work ...
I wonder if he'd charge you anything if it didn't work?

Good thoughts...
I think everything is fine until you break the main shaft apart. Then you need to get into crush washers, sprung lip seals, etc...
We shall see. I think the shop is leaning towards slapping it back together and asking me to install it with the proper shaft nut torque to see if it affects the seal's ability to well... Seal.

So I got my turbo back today.
1 seal and a good clean re-assembly later I'm back in business. <crosses fingers> (I HOPE!) </crosses fingers>
I've saved the seal to show you guys. You're not going to believe what keeps the oil from the cartridge in your IHI turbo from the exhaust housing. In my book it should be called an oil ring, because that's what it really is. Looks like a miniature piston compression ring. Unbelievable.
Anyway, I'll be throwing the turbo back in my car tomorrow and we'll see what happens.
I'll keep you all posted!

P.S. I want to give all the props (albeit mayhaps prematurely!
) to Kirk G. at PCE.
I would give you all his contact information, except yesterday was his last day working there.
He's an old school racer (from my generation) who is cool as hell and knows his way around turbos.
He's rebuilt the turbos for some of the island's fastest Hondas and Supras and is a great guy.
While it's sad to see him get out of that field, he just got a job at Pearl Harbor Shipyard so is SET for life now. Good on him.
Aloha,
Richard...

Ed,
Thanks! I guess the turbo is broken in already, eh? I should be able to boost it ASAP!
I'm planning on throwing it in tomorrow at Jimmy's Grandma's house...
Pat,
Thanks! I hope you're right.

Good luck, man. If it's later in the day tomorrow (after the Auto-X) I'd like to come learn about turbo installing, if that's OK. I'll hold tools, and I promise not to break anything. PM me if that's cool.

Greg,
The place that I use for my installs really isn't conducive to having anybody about - but I'd be more than happy to sit in and offer my EXTENSIVE turbo installation expertise (2nd time for the VF30 on my car, 1 TD04 on my car, the ion-spec in Mitch's car and the VF30 in Wes' car) with anybody else that needs a turbo stab.
Thanks for the offer though!
Richard...

VF30 back in...
A little smoke right at the beginning made my heart stop - but I think it was oil needing to be burned off.
Then again, it lasted 5 days the first time. We shall see!
*crosses fingers*
If any of you have significantly developed mental powers please use them to make sure my turbo stays intact. I'll forver be in your debt.

P.S. I'm getting fast at this turbo swap thing. I think it took about an hour and a little bit (including filing my oil return pipe).
