Problem at the track

After my second run I had white smoke coming out of my exhaust. When I idled there was a lot of smoke but when I got moving the smoke stopped. It was definatly the smell of oil. I had everyone looking in my engine compartment to find what was going on. But no one knew. The only thing that I had done was clear the catalyst low effiency code prior to racing with the OBD II. There was no wierd nioses of any sort. So I had my friend follow me home and the smoke just went away. Whats the deal?

On my failing turbo the smoke would come at idle - it would go away when I pressed on the gas. It was very faint however, and took a while to "build up".

You probably just built up a lot of pressure in the oil galley in the center cartridge. It'll do that sometimes after hard driving. I believe it happened to Mario on his stock turbo (or was that Will?)

Are you running a catch can? If not it may be time for one (to pull the oil vapor out of the pcv gases before it gets re-introduced into the intake).

If you are running a catch can it may be hooked up improperly.

Pull your i/c off to see if there's any oil film in there.

With the iffy/shaky nature of these IHI turbos I vote for it just being too much oil pressure during hard driving for the VF to take. You have a VF30, right? I wouldn't worry about it unless it becomes chronic.

Good idea!

Oh I think he has a STi, so it's a VF 39.

You will need two catch cans for STI's IIRC.

Yeah that was me, pretty much why my car did it was there was alot of moisture built up in my exhaust, because thats how a cat does its job some how. I have a high flow cat and all that moisture w/ the heat of the exhaust causes smoke.

I hope you take off the catch can, until you get another one.

But does anyone want to sell their helix oil catch can that they bought in the group buy?
