Performed Compression Test Today
Completed my compression testing. Wasn't as tough to get things situated down around the boxer configuration as I had feared.
Used a Mac Tools analog compression gauge. Got the following results from car completely warmed up and battery charge topped off:
#1 163
#2 170
#3 165
#4 170
The deviation from #1 (163) and #4 (170) is a little worrisome - but the motor isn't on it's last legs as I had originally thought.
This is sort of bittersweet. While I'm VERY glad the motor isn't on it's way out - I was hoping to find some sort of definitive reason for my WRX's lack of performance.
I'll keep looking.

Do you know anyone with a leakdown tester? It can give more diagnostic feedback on the state of the motor than a compression gauge. This is what professional race teams use to find the cause of a sick motor before tearing into it. A quality air compressor is also required to pressurize the cylinders.
You can buy them retail but here's one of the pages I found online with instructions on how to build one.
I haven't found any good pages telling how to use a leakdown tester, though. The best article I've ever read on the use of the tester was in an issue of Hot Rod magazine, many years ago. There is so much more the tester can tell you than what the online stuff talks about.
EDIT: "...can tell you...", rather than "...can do..."

From the manual
Compression (350 rpm and fully open throttle):
Standard; 951- 1,147kPa(9.7- 11.7kgf/cn?, 138-166 psi)
Limit; 834 kPa (8.5 kgf/cd, 121 psi)
Difference between cylinders; 49 kPa (0.5 k g f / c d 7 psi)

I have a leakdown tester, however the compression #'s aren't low enough for me to worry about leakage at this point.
I guess I have something else going on in here making my car a dog...
Still lookin'...

HMMMM, you could always use my excuse. I always blame my driver. Its easier and no one ever doubts the validity of your conclusion.

I would, but it's my mph that's really slow - not just my e.t.

P.S. You've gone 12.9 @ 106... There ain't a THING wrong with your car or your driving!
