One more reason NOT to buy on-post gas
3 weeks ago I was low on gas, so instead of going the extra 3 miles to get to the BP station off-post, I filled up with "93" Octane here at Fort Knox.
Now, about a month ago I tightened up my up-pipe since I had knocked it loose in Georgia. My boost was kick-*** again, and I was enjoying myself. After I put the gas in, I noticed that my exhaust seemed a bit 'rougher' than usual. I took my car out for a spin and when I hammered it in 3rd gear on the back roads, my boost peaked at 1.9bar and dropped off to 1.5 by 5900 RPM. Also, my car was running REALLY ragged.
My first assumption was that my uppipe had come loose since I was getting really bad that replicated the effects I had seen earlier.
Since I'm lazy, I was 'getting around to' getting the uppipe checked out when I had to fill up my gas tank again. On a hunch I waited until it was really low and went out to the SHELL station. Suddenly my boost was almost back to normal, good response, and boost not tapering off until the high 6k's and only then down to 1.8ish.
I filled up my tank again this week and got my old boost levels back again. I figure that the 93 octane here on post was so crappy that it induced det and the ECU compensated for it until I got the swill pumped out of my system.
I'd underestimated the effect of bad gas, and I will never do that again. Lesson learned: Pay the extra $0.10/gal and shop off post.
Gonna need to purchase mad amounts of Xylene in Colo Springs since the best stuff they sell out there is 91 and I'm mapped for 93.
