Modifying your car: Why do you do it?
Morale of the story, even the vets can do funny things. Only thing that really matters is that everyone is out there to have fun not to make themselves look badass. Case in point, all the best guys here on i-Club that run the fastest times NEVER boast about their awesomeness.

I don't think I've ever had a car that I didn't "modify" something on it.
Hell even my recent vehicle,a 2003 Jeep Liberty, has bigger tires & a K&N drop in filter.
As far as a DD goes, mild mods are probably best. If you do a lot of mods on your DD I could see how it could get tiresome.
I can't drive my Suby for more than a couple of days in a row!! My wife's Leggy though, that is another thing entirely.
As far as auto-x goes, just come out and have fun. Seems to me you did a lot of mods, might as well make some use of them. Maybe you'll fall in love with your car all over again.

Okay, I've been thinking over this past week about something. I think I've come to the point where I just dont see the point of modifying my car anymore. I know I've told a couple of friends that I've actually been thinking about selling my WRX. My thinking is, I dont really use my modifications. I mean, I've been upping the HP a little, but as some know I'm the last person who'll give it the beans on the freeway. I'm just too paranoid about getting pulled over. As far as my suspension mods go, I always say I'll go to AutoX one day, but when the day shows up I chicken out and end up not going. So my lowered stance and extreme-performance tires are for naught as well. And now I'm begining to get sick of how it feels to daily drive the car, with all the bumps and vibrations and such.
Okay, to stop this from getting to long, I started this thread to find out why all of you feel the need to keep modifying your car. And if you think maybe it's time for me to truly "hang it up". I still have a great love for cars and driving, but am starting to think that I'm better suited as a spectator.

nice question. i think you are at a point where you are just frustrated because you have a lot of things that you want to do with the car but can't. probably bec you are too busy at work or probably like a lot of us, don't have the means to go crazy on our cars. to be realistic, we all have other responsibilities and bills to pay. well, of course our cars can't feed us nor our families and aren't big enough to live in either.
i modded my car to a point where i can stop and say, i'm done and i'm happy. although i do have long term mod goals, for now i am enjoying it and everytime i drive it, it gives a smile on my face (even after a long day at work). yes, i have opportunities to fullfill my "mod wishes" on my car, but i have other passions in life, and my family is on top of that list. i would rather enjoy a nice vacation with them than giving myself a new gt35 turbo. i would rather attend a rally event and appreciate my car some more, rather than thinking about the parts that i can buy for my car. i took my car on top of Haleakala because that was something i dreamed of doing a long time ago. of course i want to take it to the rally, autox it or take it to the track but for now, i am just enjoying it.
just my .02.

Re: Thump. Yeah it gets tiring really fast. Fixing it properly will do wonders though and make your car feel like new.
I might go to the 7/12 solo event. I have a lot of fun at auto-x but b/c of family & work obligations I usually only come out once or twice a year. So, far all intents & purposes, I'm still a noob & always will be!
To make matters worse, with the mods I did last winter I now move to EM!
Look at the times those guys put up in the last race:

I have no business running with those beasts & will never be a threat to any of them.
If you can't make it out in the next few months... making your auto-x debut at the next Test & Tune (tentatively scheduled 10/18) would be ideal. You can learn a lot from the other suby (and non-suby) drivers. Joey, Francis, Chris Tanaka, Diego... they've all been super cool about giving me tips & strategic info.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I remember Joey taking a M3 through the lights while spinning...he then commented "stability control is a good thing". Or something like that.

The moral of the story with any competition-based sport is that you shouldn't walk around like Billy Badass because you are fast...being huble is the way to go...and those people that are good/ great drivers are more than willing to help you become betterI might go to the 7/12 solo event. Come to EM...it's fun! It's not about being a threat to us at all...come and have fun...the competetive class makes you want to learn what you are doing wrong and improve on those areas. And you aren't a n00b anymore if you've raced already!

Test and tune is the best way to get your feet wet. You'll get about half a years worth of lapping done all in one day, get pointers and tips from your fellow drivers, and get instructors to ride with you too. Register for it if you can, it's a lot of fun and there's no pressure, we're only out there to practice and have fun that day

I mod my car to be cool and fit in with the rest of the guys......
hahahaha. I do it just for the excitement of buying something new. I'm not into clothes or music or sports, so modding the car is my release. When I had the wagon, the power mods were more to just see what extra HP could be released. Plus, I love the way a modded Suby sounds. Then, I think I got into the rim whoring just because it could instantly change the entire look of your ride. In the end, it's all in fun and along the way have met some really cool people both here and on Nasioc.

just come out to auto-x and drive. i've been doing it since 05 when i just got the paper plates off...
like everyone has been saying, we were all noobs at one point. if you never start, you'll always be a noob and it will continue to be intimidating. the subie drivers (and former subie drivers) are usually helpful if you're not full of yourself.
