Liability/collision/homeowners....
For those of you who have dropped a considerable amount of dough into your Subarus, and I think that would probably be most of us; what actual research have you done to give yourself peace of mind that you would get back all/most of your money in the case of an accident? (that was one sentence
. I need to work on that grammar...or did the semicolon save me?)
Anyhow, what seems right to me is that homeowners insurance should cover me. I know that seems odd, being that the parts are on my car, but I KNOW that if I were to call my agent, he'd tell me that the additional $16k I've dropped wouldn't be covered under collision.
All this stuff IS my property, therefore my insurance company should have something that would cover me and homeowners is the closest I could come.
I think I'm gonna call USAA.

Step 1 is done. The lady on the other end told me that everything on the car is covered. You need receipts, but she told me that if I didn't have receipts, taking pictures or videotaping every part I've installed will be sufficient.
Steo 2 is that I'm looking for my policy. She said it's a codicil in the collision paragraph in my policy. I'm USAA by the way.

So your saying w/ USAA that you have free coverage of everything you installed for free??? Geico tells me they only cover up to 1000.00 then i have to pay for additional coverage.

Oh now this is a post that hits close to home!
Ive been with USAA for 8+ years now, and since day one they always told me that any aftermarket part (including my wheels) that is added to the car is NOT covered in case of theft. I spoke with them last month again about it and recieved the same answer.
I do have a homeowners and also a renters policy and when I set them up last year I tried to get my M3's aftermarket parts covered under those policys because they wouldn't cover them under my auto policy, and once again I was shot down.
It just seems that USAA will not cover any sort of vehicle modifications whatsoever.
Pat, Id appreciate if you'd let me know who you spoke with (person or department) at USAA so I can get more info on this. If they just recently made a policy change than thats great news. Or perhaps I just always got idiots on the phone that didn't know what they were talking about. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

I don't want to start putting any false information in anyone's head. I'm not saying that USAA covers aftermarket parts. I don't have the lady's name and didn't want it. It wouldn't do me a whole lot of good while I'm standing in front of the judge saying, "but so&so told me such&such".
I'm researching this. My hopes aren't necessarily too high, but I'm going to report facts. So far, fact is some lady over the telephone told me what she understood of their policy, and she gave me a direction for my research.

I also have USAA and when my RS got broken into they replaced everything that was stolen with equivalent stuff and sent me like $300.00 dollars. They even sent me a new deck after I told them They didn't get mine they sctrached it up. So I guess Pat they will cover everything, the first thing they asked was if I had proof of how much I paid and thats all I needed to get new stereo stuff.

Okeydoke. Policy (dated 01 APR 02) reads as follows:
I've now had a conversation with 2 of their telephone reps. They will rely heavily on receipts (mainly becomes important in theft situations), but video tape or camera would work, they just may become more important if you have to file an appeal to the settlement they give you, or further, if it goes into probate. If you're car is damaged in a collision, they will see the items on the car and would be able to give you fair market value for each.
The last person I spoke with was named Daniel Guzman @ 1800-531-8111.
I don't think Im going to go to step 3, as I know that in my case, recoupment of the money I've spent would be subjective. For instance, they don't know I bought the IC used. It's still pretty bright and shiny. It boils down to how they go about assigning value to a used (I mean it depreciated since it was originally purchased, anyhow) IC.
For now, my work is done.
Collision coverage. We will pay for loss caused by collision to your covered auto and equipment and accessories that are not permanently installed in your covered auto..."
Physical damage. We will pay for the loss caused by other than collision to your covered auto, and equipment and accessories that are not permently installed in your covered auto..."
Equipment and accessories mean the following while in or upon your covered auto:
1. Any item usual and incidental to the use of a motor vehicle as a motor vehicle. I take this to mean performance parts or cosmetic parts, not a hibachi and a wet bar.
2. Any device or instrument for transmitting, recording, receiving, or reproducing data, sound, or pictures that is capable of being operated by power from the electrical system of your covered auto, including:
a. Cassettes, compact disks...
b. Antennas and other accessories for use with any such device or instrument.
