Sounds like you have the same problem like my friend Jarred.
It's best to just drop or rebuild the motor if it not crack.

well the bad news with an sti, is that if it is knocking, it isnt cheap to fix.

there isnt a machine shop on the island that I would trust to resurface the crankshaft or resize the rods.

and if you take it to a shop, and they quote you some cheap price, they aren't going to fix it the right way, likely because thy dont know the right way.

Just because someone works at a shop, doesnt mean that they know what they are doing, be carefuln not only with the shop but with the particular person that works on it.

I have worked at dealerships and seen quite a few (ASE certified) complete retards come and go.

If its rod knock,
From a cost standpoint this is what you should be looking at:

Shortblock- $2200
Oil Pump- $150
Oil Cooler- $350

AVCS cam sprockets and solenoids should also be replaced, but can be cleaned.

Engine Gasket Set-$375
Timing Belt- $120
waterpump-$100

should probably do a clutch while you're in there-$300

Clean and shave heads $140

Labor...prob be around $1200-$1800 depending on where you go, maybe more.

Is it cheaper if it's a WRX?

it is hundreds less if it's a usdm 2.0, not for the 2.5 wrx though.

block is cheaper
labor is a little less

Dont have to clean or replace the AVCS solenoids and sprockets.

Can be a major savings.

And there are used 2.0 blocks all over the place for dirt cheap. I have three 2.0 wrx blocks just sitting here, 2 are perfectly fine.

I've had them bore and hone quite a few of my blocks.
They're timely as well.

You want my sti crankshaft that was ground off-center on one of the main journals, or do you want my heads that were stamped so deeply on the gasket surface that they leaked coolant, or do you want the block that was bored .001 more than I asked for?

haha.

Ya, go there.

You can take it to Sonics and tell him Reid sent you (he'll probably burn your car and tell you what a moron I am..jk).
Be straight up with him about your budget, and ask him flat out what the downtime will be.

I think Seth uses Ted's becasue it's right down the street, but he may use Snyders if you ask him for it specifically.
