Intake question?
Hey are any of you guys running an aftermarket intake? I've heard the rumors about intakes causing detonation, leaning out, blowing up cars, but for the most part I think it might free up some hp. Your thoughts?
Thanks!
Thanks!

oh no he said the I word.....someone quick shoot him. no but seriously be prepared to get flamed for asking a question without doing a good search. that question has been beaten to death. but i'll give you the answer since i' not a complete d*ck
basically dont waste your money till your making well over 300hp, remove the snorkel if anything and replace the filter with something a little less restrictive DO NOT and i say again DO NOT switch to a COLD AIR INTAKE!!! hope this helps

yea some argue that a cold air wouldnt make sense cuz u have an intercooler after the turbo anyways... and the turbo would heat up the air.. im sure u can come up alot of info on this one doing a search.

If anything, a few aftermarket short ram intakes may be alright. I hear Turbo XS, Perrin, and the K&N Typhoon work well (is safe) with our cars. Personally, I use the Blitz SUS short ram and never had issues with it. IMHO, it won't be of great benefit to use an aftermarket intake other than to add bling and sound (You can hear the turbo and recirc valve a LOT more). You may be better off using the Green panel filter and removing the silencer (snorkus delete).
IIRC, our cars run slightly rich from the factory, making it alright to use a quality aftermarket intake.
Then again, I may be wrong.

well as stated this questions has been beaten to death and answers can easily be obtained by doing a search.
I'll try to cover the bases.
in regards to regular intake (short rams) it is not recommened since the intake will take in more air and will give you MAF sensor irregular readings to the ECU causing your car to run inconsistantly and there is no predictable way to tune for what an intake does.
in regards to a cold air intake. the same problems are there but you'll be spending a lot more money for extra piping and it will serve no purpose since the turbo will heat up the "cooler" fender air thus defeating the purpose of a CAI. Another very bad side to a CAI is if you go into a puddle of water and you happen to suck up water into your intake. your car will throw a CEL and your car will run horribly. idle is ****ed. you won't be able to rev past 4K or 5K RPM.
I myself have tried the blitz sus (as mentioned) with ok results. I however did go back to my stock airbox with a blitz drop in type filter and was very happy with the results and consistancies of my runs at the track.
since you are looking at an intake... what is your primary focus of your car. if you notice I'm always asking n00bies like your self this questions since most of you don't know the direction you are trying to go with your cars or have not even stepped into that direction.
what I am noticing and please don't take this as a flame job, bashing...etc. is that n00bies are only buying the car cause it's pretty quick out of the box and then upgrading the hell out of it not even learning how to drive it on the track or handle your car. then **** happens and your total invesment is down the drain. i say don't upgrade your car unless you've spend some time at auto-x (first and most important) and 1/4 in your subaru.
also if you plan on going fast you need to know how to brake!!!
just words for thought!

Do whatever you want with your money. It's your cash. An intake won't do crap but look pretty. I had a green panel filter which actually made the car feel better and a K&N typhoon box and it shuddered when the engine was cold. It didn't make my car blow up, run rich, whatever. But it did idle funny until the engine warmed up.
I am running the Injen CAI (didn't read up on it first) and it makes the turbo sound loud as hell. When I first installed I thought I had an air leak. I think that’s all it did was make the turbo louder. Of course I really can't say if it helped or hurt Hp, even the slightest, since we have no dyno access.

I
have an intake because my fmic necessitates it. I also have a wideband O2 guage. I would recommend a wideband if you're running an intake. But I'd also recommend engine management. That being said, my car runs great and doesn't run lean. To each his own.
