One thing to note. Originally when the Army signed the contract with American General, there was a stipulation that all HUMVs that the Army bought would not be sold to the public (you've seen the ads for the $50 Jeeps in the back of Popular Mechanics, right?) The Army was supposed to continue to maintain them to the point of canibalization, until they gave out and then return them to AmGen (who would undoubtedly refurbish them).
Well this was supposed to be for like a period of 20 years. I came into the Army in 1987 when the Hummers were pretty new. We had been using them at that time for about 4 yrs or so. It's now 2003, so I believe that you should start to see Government Issue (GI) HUMVs at auctions and such.
