Unhappy Help removing cam gear bolts!

I'm trying to replace my head gasket and I need to remove my cam gear first but I can't seem to break the bolts. I've tried the breaker bar with a pipe extension and broke the 10mm Allen socket 4 times now. Tried the impact wrench and that didn't work.
Any suggestions on removing those stupid bolts?

Post in the engine forum and you'll get a better chance in getting an experienced answer.

Not pointing at just you, but I'm highly awed by the fact people just post in the Hawaii forum for mechanical problems when there are more faster resources out there. You can post or do a search on the "other" forum and this one. Don't constrain yourself to a Hawaii forum.

4080 is right.

If I remember correctly, Cobb makes a really strong one.

sometimes even the tool wont help. sometimes its so stuck that the allen head will round off. if youre having alot of trouble just drill out the bolt and order a new one.

I don't recommend doing this but try to get a hold of the cam gear holder. Get a half inch 10mm allen socket and a impact gun and try impact it. If its to hard to get off with a big breaker bar. Get a good hold on the cam gear or you'll being just causing some big damage. I have seen guys bend cams by just hanging on the breaker bar try to break that 10mm allen bolt. You can also try heat the bolt up alittle but you'll have to watch out cause of the plastic cam gears. If you just can't break the bolts you'll just have to pull the cams with the gear from the head. You can take to a machine shop and see if they can remove them with out damaging the cam and gear. I hope this helps you and good luck.

The bolts are under $3 each. Takes a few minutes to drill each head off. The cam itself actually sits decently far from the base of the bolt head. It would be really hard to actually hit the cam in the process. A 7/16 drill bit should be a good size to use. Just hold the gear with a rag to keep it steady. Drill through the head. As you get closer to the bottom of the head and closer to the shaft of the bolt it should start to get loose and then fall off. The allen hole is slightly smaller than that drill bit so it should center very nicely. Once the head and the cam gear come off the bolt shaft will spin off easily by either hand or with a vise grip. It doesn't take more than a minute or two if you have a fresh bit. If the tool was easy to get which its not then it might be a different story. In the past though I've seen that even if you can hold the gear the allen hex can strip out anyway and further you'll be going nowhere. Once it seems like its abnormally tight I just drill it out. Significant savings in time and effort for only a cheap part.
