You guys(Not Munkywerks, but us I-Club guys) need to realize that opening a "Tuner Shop" is way harder than it looks. Doing swaps and all that are very costly to the company since it uses their garage space. Selling wheels and small accessories is way more profitable than having to do work on a car and leaving it for a few overnighters. So alot of these companies will have to just start off as a parts dealer and not custom full on tuners. Another problem is AWD Dyno. Those things are ridiculously expensive especially from a startup unless they have huge investments by people into them. If it sounds so good why aren't alot of other shops doing it? Its just hard, the first few years of a store will be the hardest of all. You'll be lucky to find a profit.
I'm sure MunkeyWerks knows this but I'm just speaking from a point where its not so easy doing what people want. Everything will cost money. Hell, I have such a great idea of having a company that specializes on computer repair with pickup/dropoff and have it a big franchiselike company but its all about costs and budgetting a store.

... and everything you guys are asking about 'parts' wise can already be bought from Farid, ... he is The Hawaii distributor for a lot of the 'JDM' companies you've mentioned. just fyi ........
so MunkyWurks808, ... is Billy you guys' contact in Japan to get parts?

Yeah,
although I'm disappointed that it's taking so long to get some Bride seat rails, Farid's open track day kicked a$$! Bought two sets of Takata harnesses from him.

Sean,
A little competition for SG wouldn't hurt a thing.
John,
You are now Mr Obvious.
(edit: forgot the wink) The guy asked us what we wanted, we told him. I'm no business major smartypants, but some things are pretty obvious to the average consumer. Why did Walmart put so many companies out of business? I bet most of us have a pretty fair idea. Why are Vishnu and TXS such common names? Pretty obvious. But on the other hand, why don't Vishnu and TXS have a stranglehold on the market? You get the picture.
If a startup wants to be successful, they have to offer products or services that people want and at a competitive price; or they have to have something that none of their competitors have.
Startup capital is really very easy to get. It just depends on how much or little of a chunk you can convince your creditor (business partner) to take out of you.
It's not too much of a stretch of the imagination to see how hard it must've been for Gates or Case in the 70's to get financial backing. On the other hand, for me it's not too hard to see how easy it would be for MunkyWurks to completely corner a portion of the market in the blink of an eye with an AWD dyno. And I don't see that as too hard to sell to a potential investor. Maybe the answer lies in them hiring a marketing consultant to do a study in order to gauge what sort of an impact an AWD dyno would have on the certain demographic which is their target consumer.
BTW, I didn't realize Sears has the lightweight floorjacks. How much are they?

Truth is, alot of the shops in the local industry cooperate with one another.Munky Wurks Garage is a professional operation. We have a large export COMPANY in Japan that moves much of our product for us, as well as our associate (and close friend) in Japan who has passed his distribution operation of RS Watanabe in North America over to us. Along with Cannonball in Canada, we are THE only authorized importers for J-Blood products, which unfortunately for the crowd here is geared to the drift crowd. We are also the ONLY authorized distributor for Defi products here on the island - with warranty coverage in the USA. Our pricing can't be beat on this stuff locally, and we're very sure of that (aside from direct importing from Japan, which we can do also if necessary). This is information that can be confirmed by contacting these companies in Japan or USA. We also have alot of things in the works with JDM-only companies that as yet have not ever imported to the USA... and soon will be marketing used parts here as well. One thing we have up on many shops in the island (including Speedgear) is the ability to get large aftermarket body parts direct from Japan from basically any manufacturer with quick turnaround times. This includes performance parts direct from Japan as well.
Our pricing on the parts we advertise is very competetive, just come in to see us and we'll work from there (this includes BRIDE seats - even tho Speedgear stocks a lot of them). We're working on more product lines as we grow, and are already looking into some of the lines that owners here have helped mention. Thank you guys!
Billy is a friend but not business partner. The business is not affiliated with him, but we do look forward to doing business with him in the future as he gets his venture going. We met him through Monk, who is a close personal friend. We do happen to have a lot of friends in the industry (many of them who run dominating shops in the island industry) so we're not total newbs who came out of nowhere.
Our goal here is to find out as much as we can about you guys and what you'd like to see from someone you'll do business with, be it parts or service. So much of the shops out there can bring in the common stuff, so we're keeping an eye out for something unique that is normally hard to get ahold of, but that we can bring in because of our strong ties in Japan.
STi City, thank you VERY MUCH for your tips and info (very helpful! We know that the guys at Hypersports have just adopted an inventory system like you've mentioned)! You've all been very helpful and we couldn't have asked for more from you guys. As far as the AWD dyno, I really wish it was something that is within our grasp to do, but we're starting out here on our own without a HUGE amount of financial backing. Lord knows I'd like to spend more time on the dyno, especially since Stephen left everyone high and dry and closed up DynoJet Hawaii in Kailua. We don't have outside investors at this time and we're running our own show (sorry guys, for those that have PM'd about job opportunities). We even went as far as to build our showroom from the ground up with OUR OWN HANDS (gotta save money!)... so believe me we take a lot of pride in our little business, and are out to do our best!
We really appreciate the understanding you've shown us as we try to break into the scene from a small start. It really isn't easy, and we know we've got some really hard work ahead of us for the next few years, but we're ready to take on the challenge!
Whew! I just finished catching up on reading this whole thread. Anyway, I don't think I caught the part where you're located. Where are you guys? Also, I would also like to see the sti painted grill. I love the look of that thing, and I know others do too, but two fidy is waaaay too much for that thing. I'd also be interested in Volk wheels at a super competitive price. Maybe even the oem sti painted wing? Cheapest I've seen on that piece is 530 before shipping. Order some Perrin parts. Their line of products has gotten huge in the past year. Check them out. I'm sure people would be interested in the newly released exhaust. I'd buy the intercooler hoses from Perrin if you could get them. You should set up something with Kartboy as well. They have high quality parts that don't break the bank, that I'm sure a lot of us would purchase (short shifter, endlinks, exhaust hangers, etc.) That's all I can think of for now...

209.99 Regular. Our store is out of stock ATM, 62 on order.
On Halloween(Oct 31), it will be 189.99.
EDIT: From what I've seen, compared to the ones that Checkers were selling, they're ALMOST the same except for the reinforcement. Remember it is not lifetime guaranteed for Craftsman floor jacks, its just a basic 1 year, you need to keep the receipt deal.

The reason that Walmart got so big was because they lowered costs so dramatically with information systems. All they did was automized inventory as much as possible with barcoded scanning. Thus, whenever something was purchased, it was already logged into an inventory sale. That sale info went via satelite to distribution and the products sold was all ready to be shipped out. Talk about 'just in time shipping / inventory'. Thus it minimized inventory space and maximazed retail space for their stores. Furthermore, they got so big that they could leverage their buying power for lower pricing from manufacturers. Barcode also helped them manage incoming shipments, they just scaned the crate and they new everything that was inside of it.
Anyways, for the dino, I would heavily look into financing one from the bank. it will give you a huge niche market that no other company will have. It will drive sales, reputation, & customers, advertising, period! Can't you look into a loan, where they use the dino itself as collateral, such as a car loan or a house loan? Thus, a small downpayment will only be necessary

Not to mention the issue of space, because we have enough garage space to install a lift a little later down the line, but if we had to accomodate a dyno as well it would severely limit both storage space and work space.
Lord knows I bet other shops on the island would love to have an AWD dyno on location to attract customers, but there really is a reason why noone has one. It's not because local shops have ignored the need for one.

...but we're located at:
500 Alakawa Street
Honolulu, HI 96817
#(808)848-8794
Check out our site at http://www.munkywurks.com for more info.
We've already made efforts to contact perrinperformance.com and kartboy.
We also like the aero parts from Chargespeed. We do try to give good deals on Volk wheels, but we're trying to get better pricing on the stuff. We also retail Falken tires. We're actually doing a lot of work based on what you guys have posted here, so believe me, you all have really helped.

Hey, for me the bottom line is that you've listened to us. Like I had said before, I know that a dyno is probably too risky a venture for anyone, let alone a fairly new company. I just think it's an awesome idea, but it's not my money on the line.
No one has ever come on this forum, since I've been a member, and took the time to ask us and then listen without trying the hard-sell.
