Good choice. Until you have the money for some other bolt on parts and a good tune, there's no real need for a cai for the gains. How much did you pay for the SPT catback if you don't mind me asking?

Watch how you oil that K&N panel filter. Too much and you'll muck up your MAF.

APS 65mm...
I ran an APS 65mm CAI (which mimmicks the stock airbox flow) with my VF-39 and TD06-18g...no issues at all.
I can't say how much the APS unit actually helped my tune, but it surely did not hurt the numbers I did get with my 04 STI. That car was a beast. All the mods I had on that car worked together very well.
The APS CAI hangs higher than most CAI systems...never had any issues at all with water. Since it mimmicks the airflow of the stock airbox, I never experienced any CEL's with it either.
Do what you want...people will tell you this and that...but ultimately, it's your car. I personally liked my APS 65mm (I currently have an APS 70mm). The APS unit draws in cold air from the fender (like the stock intake), sounds cool, and allows you to hear your stock recirc valve...if this is what you want...
Most people just do the silencer delete, leave the stock box, and throw in a K&N drop in...works great. With the silencer delete, you can also hear your stock recirc valve...only costs $38 USD, APS CAI (if you can find one) $175-$275 USD...same results in the end.
My favorite big bang for the buck on our cars is a stout rear sway bar...changes the handling of our Subaru's dramatically...
On a side note: unless you plan on getting a tune, do not run the APS 70mm Big Maf...it definitely needs a tune to work on your car.
