Ryan, you da man! You' re giving me confidence. Maybe I'll be brave enough to open my case and throw in some dog gears, but I still have to stay away from the RA gears (The girth in my pants makes me unsure of myself when it comes to syncros).lol

It sucks that the WRX trans has a longer than normal main shaft and the tooth pitch is so small.
Doesn't APS have dog gears for the WRX trans?

I don't know how to attach a link, but I couldn't find anything else but this info. I do remember that they once advertised dog gears, but I guess they must have taken it off the market a while back.
APS High Torque Gearbox Interal Gearset
Model:
APS High Torque Gearbox Internal Gearset Although the stock 5 speed gearbox is widely recognized as the weak link of the Subaru WRX/pre 00 STI, not many people understand why. The gearbox has been unchanged in its basic torque capacity design parameters, since its utilisation in normally aspirated 1.8 litre (110 ft/lb) Libertys in the mid 1980s!! Small wonder then, that with the factory now transmitting 225 ft/lbs through it from the stock WRX engine, any more than approximately 250 ft/lbs (approximately 16 psi boost on an internally stock long engine) can lead to premature gearbox failure. APSs increased torque capacity gearset fundamentally alters the design of the geartrain with a number of objectives.Full synchromesh action retained for maximum streetability Helical tooth gear design for maximum durability Maximum increase in torque capacity, within the physical dimensions of the standard gear box housing. The torque capacity improvement is achieved through retention of the stock ratios, coupled with a reduction in the number of teeth per gear, increase in gear width and improvement in gear material. The end result is demonstrated by the table below. The APS gearset is without doubt the finest solution possible for high performance street driven WRXs, equipped with the 5 speed transmission. Able to handle325 ft/lbs on a continuous basis, the APS gearset is the perfect partner to you modified WRX engine.Suits all 2001 onwards model WRX (5 Speed). Does Not suit STI vehicles equipped with 6 speed gearbox.
Our Price: $4,190.00

I hope everyone understands how huge this is. I wish that I were still there (for more reasons than one
) so that I had a guy like Ryan who I could trust who was a transmission (among other things) guru.
You go Mr Bolohead.

Thanks guys.
I ordered the syncros on friday, I hope to see them tomorrow or thursday. Then in the tranny goes. According to David from APS, they no longer make the gearset for the 5 speed. That guy was VERY anti about the 5mt on the rex, and having looked at the gears, I am inclined to agree. The difference in the root thickness between the USDM WRX and the RA/STi gears is huge. I'll post some pics tomorrow if I remember my camera. Chibby and the rest of the fast WRX guys are awsome drivers (if you didn't already know), to be able to lay down a 12.XX on the stock box.
