AWD Dyno in the ATL

I finally got a dyno run today north of Atlanta. I was there for a conference, and arranged a dyno appointment on my travel day. I showed up an hour early and they hooked me up within 10 minutes. When my car was shipped from Hawaii, the shipper jacked up the front end. I got a new front bumper skin and had to cut it for the fmic. I took the opportunity to use the K&N Recharger (cleaner) kit and put the old skin back on to keep the filter clean. I also had a friend clean the MAF sensor before the dyno run. After I did those two things, I was running lean, 12.2 or a bit higher under full boost. I laid off the boost until the dyno day. First run was 272hp, 263tq at 12.45 or so AFR. Good numbers, but way too lean. Doug at TopSpeed got me 292hp, 297 at about a full point (11s) lower AFR. This was on pump gas. You're thinking "wow, a whole 20 whp and 34 tq more", but you'd be missing the point. Hp was up a minimum of 25whp to over 55 whp greater across the entire range with the exception of peak power, and with a far smoother curve devoid of ugly dips. Torque was up with similar numbers across the range. At 4500 rpms hp was up 45+ over the base run, 40+ at 5500, and 40+ at 6800. Tq at 4500 was up 55+ over the base run, 35+ at 5500, and 25 at 6800. A 50/50 mix of C16 and pump yielded 324 hp, 338tq. Tq at 4500 rpm was up 100 over the base run, 70 at 5500 and 40 at 6800. Hp at 4500 rpm was up 80 over the base run, 75 at 5500, and 55 at 6800. After 7-8 passes in a row with no cool down the oil temp max was 94C. This is after my oil cooler install, but I've seen higher than 100 just pissing around town before the dyno day. I was shocked at the drop as I guessed it would have been around 110C or higher. The proper tune and AFR made all the difference. Water temps were down also and I haven't installed my radiator/cool thermostat/hoses yet. Just for reference, an STI makes 245 on the dyno I used. Boost comes on more quickly as well, which was important to me and the power/torque is far flatter to redline instead of dropping off.. Obviously I have a beer in hand in celebration and would like to say thanks to TopSpeed. Total charge including a quarter tank of C16 and four maps was $277. Worth every penny. There were two guys in the showroom when I left that drove all the way from Dallas TX for a tune. It wasn't their first trip there. The one guy said "When the locals can't get it right we come to TopSpeed". Don’t get obsessed with peak numbers. The power under the curve is more important to me. "Son, get me another beer".

Yeah

I have a VF-34 and this guy (Doug) tunes all over the country. He tunes all different engine management systems. Real down to earth and no nonsense. I asked about the fuel pressure regulator mod, he said no need, he's tuned cars to over 500whp with the stock fpr. He was recommended by a local friend who rally races. If you go to topspeedsales.com there's an Evo running 700+ to the wheels and a Supra running 900+. He was very happy with the smoothness of my car and took me for a ride on the race and pump map. It was raining and the road wasn't straight and I was thinking the tires were going to break loose. The car pulls very strong. The car was always strong, but now it's very strong and the tune is very safe. He tuned my UTEC and my AVC-R. The response is only going to get better as the AVC-R "learns". The guys from Dallas had driven all night and day just for his tuning services, and it wasn't their first trip there. Pretty solid testimony in my opinion.
