If it has a distributer you simply rotate it. I can't even remember if its clockwise or not. It would be fairly obviously though by advancing the motor you should hear it rev up a lil when turning it and slowing down when retarding it.
So if you do NOT have a distributer you have pretty much only one of two options. By a stand alone ignition system and/or piggy back. Or you retune your ECU with cobb or other such products.
one last thing. If you have a distributer and it is electronically controlled like say in a toyota tocoma for example then you must use option 2 and get the piggy back or ecu flasher.
As for how far you can go?
That depends.. what octane fuel do you plan to use? Advance your timming then take a hard run or two on a hot day down the street and see if you get pinging. If not then your good to go and advance some more

Question: If you advance your ignition timing all the way to the max (like turning the distributor until it can not turn anymore) and you still do not have any detonation/pinging, is that ok? In other words, are there any other factors besides pinging that'll determine how far you can advance your timing? Of course I'm talking about advancing on higher octane (93-94 octane) gas. Thanks!
