Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Noob-ish question but differant!: Headers or exhaust first? (see inside)

Noob-ish question but differant!: Headers or exhaust first? (see inside)

I just got a 2000 Subaru 2.5RS last week and I'm already mod hungry. I don't need *that* much speed improvement, I have a bike for that = ) But i AM hungry for the subaru rumble. I've checked out youtube and anything else i can find to make out differances in exhaust notes. I see some cars with unequal length headers that are supposed to make it grumblier but less power gains, and they still sound TERRIBLE. I don't know whether you honestly have to pay and arm and a leg (stromung/invidia) to get a amazing sounding exhaust or just a 2.25" with a huge resonator/glasspack. I'm definitely no noob to cars, but this is driving me insane. I'm a big fan of custom exhausts but have no idea how to approach them with what i want. Any help please?

Well i have a Thermal coated Borla headers with rewelded flanges to a custom intermidate pipe with two high flow cats at 2.5inch to a mid-pipe with a 3inch high flow cat to a custom flanged and piped to a Apexi World Sport II muffler and it rumbles nice and gets really good throttle response. I have a shop out here that does all my custom work for exhaust.

This was my straight pipe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9ckWANF69M

This is my current setup before the three High flow cats: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJUYu_j8-q8

Thats what im talking about... Your second clip gave it an extremely raspy sound compared to the first one. Not to be a dick. Are your headers equal or unequals?

borla headers are unequal, giving it that boxer rumble

I thought they made both? Ah...

Let's say i want a custom cat-back from an exhaust shop, 2.25" piping of course. What mufflers would work great? Flowmaster? Magnaflow? What size glasspack/resonator would be necessary? I would *preferrably* like the deep grumbliness of something like a Stromung without buying name brand. I can't justify spending 500 on a cat-back. I know I'm asking alot, but there has to be other options out there.

the borla headers for the 97-05 subaru impreza rs are only unequal. for mufflers I cant recommend any thing in particular, but i have heard nothing but good things for stromung. you should also check local muffler shops and get some quotes on a custom fabricated exhaust.

well for my car total cost me about 350 almost like getting a new full exhaust but i have it all the way from the headers back and thats my total. But the reason it sounds raspy is because of the World Sports II its a 50 state legal muffler so i got no prob with cops but when i get the chance i'll do a full video on the exhaust setup and wide open throttle and crusing with all that other stuff. Just ask me i can give you some good advice on exhaust since this was my 5TH setup for an exhaust.

I guess you can do what I did and put an exhaust that is a 3" catback on your ride. I have a JGT500 exhaust for WRX on my L.

I'm starting to think that while 2.5" piping may be slightly too big, it gives a grumblier and better sound. Correct?

well 2.5 is alittle big but my car with it being a SOHC has really good low end just think it thuroly so you don't end up going through five different exhausts like me jfyi.

Thanks for the help guys, i really appreciate it. I think i'm going to purchase a set of borla knock offs once they hit ebay again in a month, then get a custom 2.25" with a huge resonator, stock cats (yeah yeah but i want to keep the sound deep as possible), and a flowmaster super 40/magnaflow/stromung if i get a damn good price.

Thanks for the pics Vince, i've been looking everywhere for better pics of the borlas. While i am VERY tempted by the million mile warranty, I've heard nothing but amazing things about the *newer* version of the knock-offs. I'm on a college student budget, so yeah.
