2001 RS 65Kmiles - bone stock, no mods
Got a few noises coming from car. Have a few mechanics idea of what it might be, but they all want to have the car for a while to figure it out.
1. at idle a squeak. think its the belts. used some belt dressing it made squeak less, but still there. 1 mechanic said bearings on of the pulleys?
2. at idle, sounds like a rough idle, don't feel like a rough idle. when I put clutch in, sound goes away. rough idle noise, like when your car desperately needs a tuneup (old style engine with points), maybe needs the timing adjusted. had this sound in my 88 v8 mustang. finally found a mechanic that just did a better tuneup, no more noise. thats what it sounds like. i guess I dont have any better way to describe it.
3. light acceleration 2nd thru 4th gears. basically when I have gas pedal down enough to maintain speed or slight acceleration, sounds like wheels howl (you know, like the sound from mud tires on a 4x4?). Sound does not go away thru the turns. 1 mechanic thought it was 1 or more wheel bearings. Another mechanic said not wheel bearings since sound does not go away in turns, thinks it is tranny input shaft bearing.
4. high pitched whine. sounds like a whimpy turbo. reminds me of the engine noise of a cheap airplane (DC10, sorta). Starts around 40mph, drones out all other noises, get louder as speed increases. Gear and RPM do not affect noise. Neither does being in neutral or having clutch in. Also noise is same @70mph uphill in gear or downhill in neutral. 1 mechanic thought vaccuum leak.
things I think I should fix;
a. foam/insulator around my fake hood scoope, 1 side is missing
b. lower bumber cover missing lots of fasteners
c. new belts, might as well
d. tighten heatshields
e. replace tranny and rear diff fluids
for the tranny I am thinking of redline mt-90 and/or superlight shockproof, maybe 75w90ns for rear diff????
all input good and bad appreciated.

I'm not to sure about the other ones, but problem 3 sounds like a wheel bearing to me. I have a 2001 RS and had the same problem and the noise did not go away in turns. My wheel bearing got so bad that you couldn't tell which side it was from but the Subaru dealership replaced the passanger side and the noise went away.

hmmm..well i am with the other guys...if you dont get any wheel shake at a higher speed then it goona be in the hub..
af far as the squiky noise..get a new belt..make sure its snug...or possible a pully...but when you dressed the belt and it sort of went away...start with the belt..
rough idle with little pep....try fuel injector cleaner and a new air filter.....sence it is only there when the car has a load on it (in gear)....
=-)
