why are there 2 air filters on the 99 2.5 rs? there is one right above the passenger head light. . . and another right before the TB. Is the filter before the TB needed?

 

It's an emissions thing. I believe you can remove one or the other if you are so inclined.

go to Subaru and get the "gasket" for the filter above the TB. Keep the front one if you have a MAF equipped vehicle.

 

Thats what I was thinking! I wasnt going to remove the one before the MAF, i saw no reason for the one above the TB.

this "gasket" you speak of. . . Is it an extention of the intake tubing?
Im confused as to why its in Quotes, is it not really a gasket?

 

There is a gasket which looks a lot like the filter with the filter element removed. If you call your local dealer, the parts personnel *should* know what you are asking about. No guarantees though.

PS you can't just remove the pleats and put the filter back in, it will leak. The gasket is reinforced to hold up under the vacuum.
