Midpipe
Has any one here changed their midpipe? Someone mentioned before that the N1 midpipe sounded ricey. What is wrong with just putting on a standard bigger pipe? I was thinking about a glass pack with a 2.25 diameter, but then i'm afraid that will make it too quiet. Any suggestions? Other wise I don't see what is wrong with just a standard pipe which is like 10 bucks in parts. I've heard a 4cyl Jeeps with bigger pipes that sound nice, but they also have a different engine architecture.

I had a local shop order a 10 foot stick of 2.5 inch stainless steel and then bend me a custom pipe. To be legal I had the shop integrate one of the most freeflowing cats out there, a Northstar cat. With Borla Headers and cat back piece, the exhaust sounds great and breathes effortlessly. I suggest you talk with reputable local shop.

I have Borla Headers, no cats (yes I'm evil), with a 2.25"glass pack in the stromung 2.25" midpipe and the stromung dual tip SS muffler. The car sounds great. Not ricey one bit.
here's a clip. It was a little too close to the exhaust pipe when I revved it so it distorted just a little bit. However you get the idea especially when you listen to the idle.

Major exhaust components:
headers/manifolds
resonators
mufflers
Catalytic convertors
pipes: midpipe, tailpipe etc
A glass pack is a kind of muffler. Often called "cherry bombs". They are basically a pipe with a bunch of holes in it, wrapped in fiberglass enclosed in a bigger pipe. They act similar to a resonator.
They are a straight shot for exhaust to travel-very low restriction and just remove the high notes in the exhaust. Without the glass pack or catalytic convertor the exhaust is very "pipey" or "ricey"

i just had minekee add a 2.25 custom midpipe to my scoobysport axleback. I drive an 02rs. im not sure about you guys but there is no cat in the midpipe. from the outside it sure looks like a cat, the mechanics wouldnt touch it. and were mocking me. They said "were going to have to charge you 20 bucks to take that thing down and tell you its a cat. We know what were talking about and that is most certainly a cat so you might as well save yourself 20 dollars" i was like just take it down and look in it. needless to say they came back 5 minutes later and were like "what diameter piping did you say you wanted again?" i just laughed.
but i did not have them add any resonators into the system. I wouldnt say that the car got much louder. maybe a little fuller sounding. and a little more of that warble/crackle subaru sound that we all love. but not obnoxious. definate increase in performance.

You are right.
There isn't a cat in the mid pipe.
There are four sections on our cars.
Headers/Manifold
Cat section
mid pipe
tailpipe.
My cat section is replaced with a 2.5" pipe that is reduced down to 2.25 at the glasspack.

So you guys went up to 2.5" I was thinking 2.25" just because I don't want to lose any low end torque. Maybe it's ok to go up to 2.5" as long as you leave the stock cats on or go smaller on your muffler? Did you guys have any low end loss at all?

I only went 2.5 after the headers because it WASN'T mandrel bent. It is reduced to 2.25 at the cherry bomb. The 2.25 is mandrel bent. So I don't think the flow is much different between the two.
