Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

exhaust question once again

header gaskets?? how many types??

ok so i decided to buy a borla header but it didnt come with gaskets. i decided to go to my local dealership (stevens creek subaru) and get some oem gaskets. when i got there, i told them that i need gaskets for a 2.5l engine. they told me that there were at least 4 kinds of gaskets for that motor and i that i needed to provide a VIN number to get the right one. at the time i didnt know what my exact VIN was so i couldnt get my gaskets.

I was under the impression that the 2.5l engine was the same throughout the whole 2.5 RS models. Can someone give me some info on this???

A stupid question but can you reuse the gaskets that came on the car when replacing??

thanks

Yes you can reuse the old one if it's still in good shape, maybe sandwiched it between slight coats of that orange colored Permatex gasket sealer.

But wouldn't it be wiser if you buy the gaskets firsthand before finding out later that you cannot use the old ones cuz they're borked. how much mileage do you have on it? That'll prolly give you the idea if you need them.

And yes, even online like subaruparts, they'll ask for your VIN. Nothing major, they're just checking against the info you gave them as to what application it will be for.

thanks for the info. yea, i figured itd be best to replace the gaskets since im replacing the header anyway. i have 16,000 miles on her.

i was looking at the setup when i was under the car while changing oil and it seems easy to R/R but i was wondering about one certain bolt that connects to the cat. one side is do-able but the other is being blocked by many pieces of metal and what not. any tips on doin an R/R on a header?

Exhaust system compatibility

I know ive tried asking this else where, but I havent found an answer yet..

For the Imprezas, are exhaust systems compatibale as cat-back or axle back from the wrx to the 2.5i... I am seeing tons of systems out there for wrx's only, sti's only, wrx and sti's, but non that specify 2.5i.. besides the obvious engine difference, is there much difference in the cars along the bottom (ie, gas tank position, axle position, chassis differences) that would cause a wrx exhaust not to fit???

Im dying here, Ive been wanting a bolt on exhaust ever sisne i bought this car and still cant find one... any advice.

Whooopsie, i've forgotten about this thread.

Sil, don't try to unbolt the manifold from the catpipe while still on, it'll make you mutter every expletive in your voc, it's possible that way but taking off the mani along with the catpipe will be much much easier, start with the catpipe to mid first, that the springbolted one.

Wait, i think the good folks at scoobymods have an illustrated one. Check them out www.scoobymods.com

One important one, be very careful of the o2 sensors, there're 2, 1 b4 the cat and 1 after.
They're quite a bundle if you messed them up, foreign substance are a no no. GL

2k6, try posting your MY, so peeps will be able to suggest things without guessing. If it's an 06, I'll be of no help. Haven't seen it nor read about what's under that one.
