this is an intresting one. i have a 2.5" custom catback, with a Nur Spec canister. the punks in blue in SSF says it might be too loud, and cite me. when i put a resonator on, it seems to get more of an aggressive sound, but not louder. ( scoobyboy seems to like it ) is there a way that i can silence this, and not put in a Blitz silencer? ( all the BAIC guys know why ) should i go to 2and 1/4 " pipng? some say that 2.5 is too big for a 1.8l. is that true? will i notice any gains in hp/tq from going to 2.25?

wow when u said you had 2.5" piping i thought you had at least a 2.5L engine. 2.5" piping is wayyyy too big for a 1.8L, you should be looking at a 2"-2.25" prefferably 2" as 2.25" is more suited to the 2.2L, you are probably 'losing' power now. you should notice a bottom end improvement with smaller piping.

maybe weld a longer resonator on the midpipe to silence it more? thats what the muffler shop told me before..
i think you would run rich either way.. how did you check?

basically running rich is there is too much fuel in the mixture so it is not the proper ammount so you don't get full power. Since the excess fuel takes up space which would be occupied by air, creating less power output efficiency.
Rau,
Did you do an ECU reset after you installed your Exhaust? I had a similar problem with sound after installing my header back. I forgot to reset ECU and threw a CEL after about 50 miles. After ECU reset and a day or 2 of driving, the exhaust seemed to quiet down noticably.

Gonna bump this post, since I'm curious as well. Is it necessary to reset the ECU after mods like intakes, exhaust, etc???
Also, responding to a comment earlier in the thread, how do you "know" the car is running rich? Or lean, for that matter, without an AFC or something? Although I suppose if you had an AFC, you could fix it as soon as it came up...
Danka.

Yes, what he said. How do you know it's running rich? When is it running rich? It's supposed to run rich during start-up and full acceleration.
If you KNOW it's running TOO rich, then you can run a lower octane gas. Still too rich? Put an intake on it with a high flowing filter. Still too rich? You MAY be able to use a 2.5ltr Legacy (or 2.5RS) ECU on your car. I used to run this way for years using a 1999 2.5ltr Legacy GT ECU. Threw a CEL (High Fuel Temp Sensor [my car doesn't have one]) but the car ran leaner than using my stock ECU. I know because I switched ECUs during dyno testing after each run and all tests showed the Legacy ECU ran leaner (and gained an extra 2-4hp to boot). Woot!
Still too rich! Your car has issues then. Ha!
