I was wondering if anyone could tell me how i should be monitoring the exhaust gas temperature? i got a catback..and i was reading forums and was curious about the EGT. When should i be concerned? cuz i can't tell right now if it's running too hot or not. I dont have any gauges yet so i'm driving blind.
thanks in advance,

If your car is a non-turbo and mostly factory I would not be concerned with EGT. EGT monitors ignition timing mostly and fuel. EGT can be a good tool to monitor a high performance turbo setup. N/A cars need to be built up before EGT becomes a concern. If fuel gets lean EGT will climb. If Ign Timing is too retarded and there is excess fuel EGT will climb. Monitoring EGT will keep your turbo operational and may warn you of a lean condition that could melt a piston. It is a good tuning tool. Air/Fuel ratio meters inconjunction with EGT guages will give you a good picture of how well the engine is performing. Like any Guage we have to understand them, and most importantly...READ them!!
I hope this helped. Any comments on the subject?

dude that's sounds reasonable. Thanks a lot. Now i have a better understanding of why we would use the gauges other than just for show =).. nah but i knew we had to monitor these things but i didn't know when i should be..
