Well I'm running the Weapon-R short Ram Secret Weapon Intake and I love it also bought the Heat shield air box (did some modifying due to being designed for the 99-00 models) also painted the box matte black for better stealth. My RS runs better and has a quicker throttle response compared to my friends CAI on his DOHC 99RS model (we also both adjusted the throttle cables for better response and also just to make sure it was an even playing field.)

The only benefit of a CAI is the colder air it pulls from the fender instead of hot air in the stock airbox location. I can't imagine how running it as a short ram would be a good idea.
Any comparison between two cars is meaningless. To compare you would need to try both parts on the same car, otherwise there are just too many other variables.

imho if you are n/a, go cai. it will suck colder, more dense air in and give added power.
if you are boosted, short ram. whats the point of sucking cold air into a hot *** turbo? thats what the intercooler is for...

I have a 2002 wrx wagon so keeping in mind that I have a turbo, these are the two intakes I have tried: the stock airbox with a K&N drop in filter and a Subaru SPT Short Ram Intake with the heat shield. I also left the plastic scoop under the hood and the silencer/snorkus in the fender so any air that does get pushed into that scoop at speed will get pushed onto the short ram's filter.
I would say I felt a noticeable improvement in throttle response and a definite increase and change in sound. You can hear the turbo spooling up quite clearly, and even more so after installing a 3inch bellmouth downpipe and an Injen up pipe.
I chose the SPT SRI because it is a genuine Subaru part, it is CARB legal and came with paperwork, and because Subaru themselves say that you do not need a tune, just an ECU reset, for this part to integrate properly.
I did not want a CAI also because I plan to rally my car and I would worry about water, mud, and dirt hitting the filter.

With your car you should be running neither....it has been found that using any intake that bypassing your hemfoltz resonator (in the fender) causes the car to run super rich at around 1800 rpms. I had the WR SRi for awhile until I found this out and then I switched to a hybrid intake system that flows air just as well.
So with some intake piping from ebay, wrx air intake duct, wrx hemfoltz resonator, and a few couplers your done. My total cost was maybe $80.
I'm bringing in the coldest air possible as well. My intake air temps dropped dramatically.

The only problem I have with CAI's is that they often sit low on cars and when you live in an are with a lot of rain, you run the chance of sucking up water into the engine. SRI's on the other hand, sit nice and high and have less of a chance of sucking in water but they do suck in hotter air. In my opinion, it all comes down to the environment you live in. Personally I like the K&N drop in filter, its soo much more simpler and I have found with VW's it works just as well as the average CAI or SRI.
