This might inspire something... I also have a 2.2 automatic- I considered not modding it, but said what the hell

I also have a perrin pulley, 8.5mm plug wires, and iridium plugs, which I believe were all worth while- esp. the pulley.

i have a very similar car. 1995 impreza LX 2.2l Automatic.
the intake is always a fun option it wont do much (especailly at low revs) but it sounds great around 3k. i have done this to my car and you can keep the stock MAF sensor and intake hose deally. you just need to buy or fabricate a piece that will bolt to the MAF sensor and then will mate with a coen filter. very easy.
to make it just pull off the airbox for a min trace around the MAF sensor on some cardboard. make sure to include bolt pattern. then use the cardboard to trace th pattern onto some aluminum or steel. cut it out quick cut out a 3" hole in the middle. weld or jb weld on a piece of 3" pipe and whalla you got a intakle adapter.
or you can buy one on ebay for $15 + $15 s/h
for quick horses i would reccomend the Unorthodox racing under drive pulleys. not too pricey for the small gain your looking for.

I have on my 1999 OBS:
K&N drop in air filter
Borla Cat-back
Borla headers
Perrin lightweight crank pulley.
This pulley really made a difference I thought. I too have an Automatic and it really made the car stay in gear longer (being able to get the full potenial of th rpms). Going up hills has been made a lot more fun now with it and it seems as though I can pass cars much better when I'm on the freeway, especially when dumping on the gas. I totally recommend this piece and plus it's not underdriven. you can get it from rallitek.com. plus it isn't to exspensive!
Also working on the suspension for this car makes it a lot more fun to drive. Get yourself the perrin rear sway bar. this made going around the corners better even if the car has no been lowered. plus the wagon really does need this because it is a little boat like in the rear.
Suspenion:
perrin rear adjustable sway bar
cusco front strut tower bar
I have usually found most of my stuff at rallitek.com but i am sure other places carry this stuff as well.
