When should i do my first Synthetic oil change?

i have a 06 STi with 1600 miles on it and i'm going to be taking it in for it's firstoil change. When I told the service guy that i wanted Synthetic he said that i'm not supposed to do it till 36,000 miles? I thought that Synthetic Oil was the best and that you should use it every time cuz it's cleaner and better for the engine? What should I do?

Honestly...when ever you feel like it. Everyone and their mama will tell you something different. I would follow Subarus break in procedure which is 3000 or 3750 miles for the first OCI. After that its up to you.

At 3750 I switched to redline synthetic, I have 49K miles on my wrx and consume 1-2 quarts every 4000 - 5000 miles. The majority will tell you not to switch until 10K or 15K miles. Good Luck with your decision.

^^ Yeah, whenever you want. Some people say after the first 1000, some say wait till after 10K. I changed at 5K (after the first oil change) and never went back. No problems so far. Running AMSoil after doing a bunch of research.

But when I switched over, I also went full synthetic - Redline Shockproof HD went into the tranny, and Mobil 1 synth went in the rear diff too.

^^^ Very nice ^^^ Other very nice syntheics are from Motul and Purple ... haze?... somthing like that.

I run all redline through the drive train and Motul for engine oil.

My recomendation... Buy the car using minneral engine oil and drive for 1000 mi. At 1000 change it out for a high grade minneral engine oil and keep for 3000 mi. During this time make sure you give the car a little bit of all of the rpm and throddle ranges. Take it to redline a few time, wot and everything in between. This will prevent a carbon ring building up inside the cylinder from running at only low rpms and loads...
